Kids Haircuts in Cranbourne West, What to Expect

Kids haircuts are a different job than adult cuts. The chair feels bigger, the clippers sound louder, and even confident kids sometimes freeze up when it’s their turn. Here’s how kids cuts actually work at Sam Ink in Cranbourne West, and how to make the first few visits go smoothly.

Who kids cuts suit

Any age from first haircut (usually around 12 to 18 months) through teenagers. Teenagers past 15 or 16 usually book under the standard adult service.

For babies and toddlers on their first cut, both parents often come along. Perfectly fine, no issue.

What to expect on the day

Arrive on time, not early. 5 to 10 minutes before is perfect. Any earlier and you’ve got a bored kid sitting in a waiting area, which rarely ends well.

Short wait if possible. We try to run on time for kids bookings specifically because waiting is harder for them. Weekday afternoons after school and weekend mornings are the quickest.

The barber will say hi first. Settles the kid, shows them the clippers aren’t scary. For nervous first-timers, a parent sitting in the chair holding the kid is normal.

Short, straightforward cuts. We can do fades, scissor cuts, basic styles. Nothing complicated for first-timers. Keep it simple, get them comfortable, build up to more detailed cuts over visits.

The cut takes 15 to 25 minutes. Sometimes less for simple trims, slightly more if the kid needs a few breaks.

How to prepare a nervous kid

Talk about it ahead of time. A day or two before, mention they’re getting a haircut, show them a photo of what you’re thinking, keep it positive.

Watch a sibling or parent go first. If possible, book the kid after you’ve had yours done. They see it isn’t scary.

Bring distraction. A tablet, a book, a favourite toy, snacks. Keeps hands and attention busy.

Don’t promise it won’t tickle or feel weird. It does. Just acknowledge it beforehand so there’s no surprise. “The clippers tickle a little bit, that’s normal.”

Avoid the word “cut”. Some kids hear “haircut” and think of actual cutting. “Trim” or “tidy” sometimes lands easier for sensitive kids.

Reward after, not before. Treats or a trip to a favourite spot after the cut, not promised as a bribe. Keeps the mood right.

For really young kids (first few haircuts)

Lap sitting is fine. Parent sits in the chair, kid sits on the parent’s lap. Easier than putting a 2 year old alone in a big chair.

Take breaks when needed. Better to pause for 60 seconds and finish calmly than push through a meltdown.

Shorter sessions. Sometimes a first cut is just the fringe and the rest can wait. The barber will work with you on what’s realistic.

Hair in a bag. We can save a lock of hair from the first cut if you want. Just ask.

Styles for kids

Short on top, longer: The most popular kid cut. Easy to maintain, grows out well.

Scissor cuts: For kids who don’t love clippers, the whole cut can be done with scissors. Takes slightly longer but feels less intimidating.

Fades: Possible from any age, but worth saving for kids who can sit still for 25 to 30 minutes.

Longer styles: Kids with longer hair just need a trim and tidy. Scissor-only cuts work well.

Specific style requests: Pictures help. If your kid wants a specific style they’ve seen, bring a photo. The barber will tell you honestly if the kid’s hair type can do it.

Timing between cuts

Kids hair grows fast. Rough guide:

  • Short cuts: every 4 to 6 weeks
  • Mid-length: every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Longer styles: every 8 to 10 weeks or just when the fringe needs trimming

Pre-school photo day or holidays, book a week or two before so the cut looks settled rather than fresh.

The honest version for difficult cuts

Some kids are nervous for the first few visits. Normal and expected.

Some kids genuinely hate it every time. Also normal, and gets better as they grow. The barber’s job is to make it as calm as possible, not to force a cut that isn’t working. If a session needs to end early, that’s fine. We’ll do what we can.

Autism, sensory issues, specific needs. Mention when booking so we can plan the session properly. Earlier appointments when the shop is quieter usually help.

Combined family bookings

If you want to book yourself and the kid in the same visit, mention it when booking. We can usually arrange back-to-back slots. Parent first often works best so the kid sees the process.

Booking

Book direct through the barber page, or call (03) 8753 5359 to talk through if you want to flag anything specific first. Mention it’s a kids cut when booking so we allocate the right time.

The best kids haircuts are the ones that build up over visits. First one is a win if they leave calm. The style gets better each time after that.
