New to Cranbourne West, A Local's Guide to Getting Ink
Just moved to Cranbourne West? Or you've lived here a while but never got around to sorting out a proper local tattoo artist? Either way, this is the plain guide to getting ink done well in your own neighbourhood.
Why local matters more than you'd think
There's a temptation to travel for tattoos. Big-name Melbourne artists in Fitzroy or Collingwood, or specialist studios in the city. If you've got a specific artist in mind whose work is exactly what you want, that trip is worth it.
For everything else, local wins. Here's why.
Consults are easier. A 10 minute drive for a consult is nothing. A 45 minute drive through peak hour is a real commitment, and people put it off. Anything that reduces the friction between "I want a tattoo" and "I've booked a consult" is worth having.
Touch ups are easy. Most tattoos need a small touch up within a few months of healing. Small spots that dropped out, edges that softened. If your artist is 5 minutes away, this is a quick weekday visit. If they're an hour away, it becomes an afternoon out.
Multi-session projects are easier. Sleeves, backs, thighs. All done across multiple sessions spaced weeks apart. Local means each session is straightforward. Distance means each session is an event.
Continuity. Building a relationship with a local artist means they know your skin, your pace, your style. Every session gets easier.
What Cranbourne West has
Sam Ink is a full multi-artist studio here in Cranbourne West. Six tattoo artists across the main styles, plus barbering, laser removal and piercing in the same building.
The mix of specialists matters. Instead of one artist trying to do everything at a fair standard, each artist here has focused their portfolio on what they're best at:
- Sam for large scale realism, black and grey portraits, animals
- Ram for realism and fine line floral, sleeves and large projects
- Troy for realism, traditional and neo trad, cover ups and rework
- Teejay for colour realism, blackwork, neo trad, fine line and anime
- Aaron for black and grey realism and custom lettering
- Yaz for flash and small pieces as an apprentice
Whatever style you're drawn to, someone here specialises in it.
The neighbourhood in general
Cranbourne West sits inside the City of Casey, in Melbourne's south east. Growing residential area with easy access to Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren, Botanic Ridge and Lynbrook. Direct road connections through the South Gippsland Freeway and Thompsons Road, plus public transport via Cranbourne station.
If you're new to the area, the wider Casey community is friendly, growing fast, and increasingly well-served for hospitality, retail and services. Sam Ink is one part of that.
Your first visit, step by step
Look at the artists' portfolios. Go through the tattoo page and each artist's profile. Find pieces that resemble what you want, in the style you're drawn to.
Book a consult with the artist whose work fits best. Free, no obligation. 15 to 30 minutes.
Bring your idea. Reference images, rough placement, rough size. Even a vague idea works. The consult is where it gets sharpened.
Leave with a plan. Quote, timeline, next steps. If it's a same-day tattoo, you might do it right there. If it's custom or larger, a booking date for the actual session.
Come back for the session. Follow the aftercare guide.
Come back for a touch up if needed. Usually free within a couple of months of healing.
Combining with other services
Because Sam Ink runs four services under one roof, plenty of locals combine visits:
- Haircut in the same visit as a tattoo consult
- Laser session and cover up consult on the same day
- Piercing added onto a partner's tattoo appointment
- Kids haircut while you get yours done
Saves multiple trips.
The most common first-tattoo questions from new locals
How much will it cost? Depends on size, detail and artist. Quoted at consult, no hidden fees.
Will it hurt? Most people describe it as a hot scratching feeling. Manageable. Some placements hurt more than others (ribs, sternum, hands, feet). Your artist will tell you what to expect for your specific placement.
How long will it take? Small pieces, an hour or under. Medium pieces, 2 to 4 hours. Larger pieces, split across multiple sessions.
Do I need to book far in advance? For popular artists and weekends, yes. Weekdays and smaller pieces often have shorter waits. Book a consult and you'll get an honest answer for the specific artist and piece.
What if you already have tattoos from elsewhere
Bringing existing work to a new studio is totally normal. If you want an addition or continuation of a piece done elsewhere, or a piece that ties into existing tattoos, the artists here work with what you've got. Bring photos of the existing work to the consult.
For cover ups or rework of an old tattoo, Troy is the specialist. Book with him.
What if you want to get pierced or lasered instead
Same building, same booking system.
For piercing, see the piercing page. Book a consult and we go through what suits your anatomy and lifestyle.
For laser removal, see the laser page. Send a photo of the tattoo through the enquiry form and we'll come back with a session count and quote.
