Tattoo Touch Ups in Cranbourne West, What to Know
Most tattoos need a small touch up at some point. Not because the artist did a bad job, but because skin heals unpredictably and some spots drop out during the process. Here’s how touch ups actually work and what to expect.
What a touch up is
A touch up is a short session to fix small spots in an existing tattoo. Usually ink that didn’t take properly during healing, a line that softened more than expected, or a solid black area that healed patchy.
Most touch ups are quick, 15 to 30 minutes, and happen once the original tattoo is fully healed, usually 2 to 3 months after the initial session.
Touch ups are not the same as rework or cover ups. Those are bigger jobs for tattoos that need redesigning or lifting from scratch. If you want a tattoo heavily redone or covered, see our cover up vs laser removal guide.
When touch ups are needed
Even perfectly done tattoos sometimes need touch ups on:
- Hands, feet, fingers, ankles (poor blood supply, ink drops out more often)
- Elbows and knees (constant movement during healing)
- Ribs (constant movement from breathing)
- Solid black fills (sometimes heal patchy)
- Fine detail work in high-friction spots
If your tattoo is on the forearm, calf, thigh or back, the chances of needing a touch up are much lower.
When they’re not needed
A tattoo that looks slightly cloudy for a couple of weeks after peeling is not a tattoo that needs a touch up. That’s a normal healing stage. The depth and sharpness return once the top layer of skin settles, usually in week 3 or 4.
Wait until the tattoo is fully healed before deciding whether a touch up is needed. Many people worry about things that fix themselves.
What touch ups cost at Sam Ink
Touch ups are charged. Pricing depends on the artist, the size of the touch up, and how long it takes. For most small touch ups it’s a modest fee, quoted when you book.
If you’re coming back for a touch up on a tattoo done at Sam Ink, mention it when you book so the artist can set aside the right amount of time.
When to book your touch up
The right window for a touch up is between 2 and 3 months after the original session. By then:
- The tattoo is fully healed through all skin layers
- Spots that genuinely dropped out are clearly visible
- Spots that just looked cloudy during healing have resolved themselves
- Your skin is settled and ready to take a touch up cleanly
Earlier than 6 to 8 weeks and the tattoo isn’t fully healed yet, so you can’t tell what actually needs attention. Later than 6 months and the tattoo has fully settled, so the touch up itself can look slightly different from the original work.
How to spot what needs touching up
Look at the healed tattoo in good daylight, not under harsh indoor lighting. Compare to photos taken when the tattoo was fresh.
Things worth touching up:
- Visible gaps in solid black areas
- Lines that have obvious breaks or soft spots
- Small areas where the colour has clearly dropped
- Detail that looks noticeably softer than the surrounding work
Things not worth worrying about:
- A tattoo that’s slightly less sharp overall than day one (every tattoo settles into skin)
- Minor variations in colour depth across a piece (normal)
- Slight line thickness variations (normal)
If you’re unsure, send a photo to your artist and ask for an honest read.
Touch ups on tattoos from other studios
If you got a tattoo elsewhere and want it touched up at Sam Ink, that’s possible but priced as a full new session rather than a touch up rate. The artist is working on someone else’s piece without knowing exactly how it was tattooed originally, which makes it harder than touching up their own work.
For significant rework or cover ups of outside tattoos, book a consult with the artist whose style fits what you want.
How to book
Message your original artist direct, or book through their page the same way you’d book any other session. Mention it’s a touch up so they can plan the time slot.
For small touch ups, weekday availability is usually easier than weekend.
Aftercare for touch ups
Treat the touch up spot exactly like a new tattoo. Same aftercare rules apply for the first 2 weeks. See our tattoo aftercare guide for the full breakdown.
Avoiding touch ups in the first place
Most touch up needs come down to how the tattoo healed, which comes down to how well you followed aftercare. The honest version:
- No sun on fresh tattoos
- No gym, swimming or sauna for the first 2 weeks
- Don’t pick scabs or peeling skin
- Keep it clean and moisturised, thinly
- Sleep on clean sheets
Follow those and the chances of needing a touch up drop significantly, especially on well-circulated areas like the forearm, thigh or back.
Booking

A touch up isn’t a sign of a bad tattoo. It’s a normal part of getting a tattoo that heals in a tricky spot.
